Container at the corner of Jackson Avenue and Orchard Street, Long Island City, Queens
March 2001
I picked this container because it was such a romantic pink color. The graffiti on the container said “Local 33,” which I think must be a union. The container was in a parking lot that was deserted during the day, so I didn’t meet anyone. There were a lot of pipes lying on the ground next to the container, so I had to balance on them while painting. I fell over a couple times. When I went back several months later, the container was no longer there.
I made the close-up of this painting into a postcard because I liked it so much. The painting is based on Richard Wilson’s Rome from the Villa Madama.
