THE PILLAR-BUILDER ARCHIVE, 2013

Aliens find a trove of over 4,000 postcards of almost identical classical and neoclassical buildings inside a buried metal canister and attempt to make sense of them by grouping like with like resulting in a historically and geographically impossible system of organization. Straight lines linking postcards indicate “identical” buildings, lines with a circle or semi-circle indicate a moderate or serious deviation from the adjacent building.

The Pillar-Builder Archive (installation view and details at the Corcoran Gallery of Art), Ellen Harvey, 2013. Approx. 4,000 postcards, tape, watercolor on wall, 10 ft. (3m) x 90 ft. (27.5m). ). Photograph: Paul Bothwell.
